Day 8: EVOLVED MUTATIONS

img_25741.pngimg_e25761.jpgDay 8 of #scrypthalloween looks at my short spinoff #book EVOLVED MUTATIONS. Some facts: 1) It was published on September 15th 2016. 2) the entire contents of the book are deleted scenes from my novel GENETIC MORSELS. I felt they worked better on their own. 3) one of the scenes came to me when I was standing overlooking #Philadelphia from the top of the Comcast building. I thought how horrible it would be if someone jumped, and it instantly became part of the story. 4) because this was based on people with extraordinary abilities I almost brought artists in to do another graphic novel, but decided it would have not made the due date.Instead I wrote it in a way where it could be converted into a comic version at some point if I desire down the line. 5) the cover is comprised of close up photos of my family’s eyes and altered to represent different super abilities. The top left is my son, then clockwise it’s me, my daughter, and my wife @homemadedelish .

On the 7th Day of Christmas…

ON THE SEVENTH DAY OF CHRISTMAS MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME: 7 Super Heroes…

stephen wiltshire6 corrupt files, 5 demon spawns!  4 lost souls, 3 werewolves, 2 vampires, and zombies in a story.

I’ve always been a fan of comic books.  They were a big part of my youth growing up and now I get to see them on the big and small screens.  When I wrote GENETIC MORSELS and its spinoff EVOLVED MUTATIONS, I wanted to portray abilities in a more realistic manner.  I wanted a comic book like novel that wouldn’t be so… well comic booky.  It had to be something any reader can enjoy because it would relate to the real world and how physics actually work.  Aside from the science behind it I also looked to real life examples of extraordinary abilities.  Take Stephen Wiltshire depicted here.  He can fly over a city in a helicopter one time and then draw every single detail he saw accurately.  He’s got the world’s most fascinating photographic memory.  If you had a super ability what would you want it to be?

Day 23 – Beyond Human Trilogy

beyond-human-cover

Day 23 of #scrypthalloween looks at my BEYOND HUMAN TRILOGY. @dpipito did the cover art as a tribute to DaVinci’s Vetruvian Man. It shows a figure that is not quite human, but something else. You can see human traits in one of the images. The #book includes the #novels: GENETIC MORSELS, PLANET ATE, and DEVOURED UNIVERSE, plus the spinoff short stories: EVOLVED MUTATIONS, ALIEN ENCOUNTERS, and COSMIC ORBITS. There is also a bonus log entry at the end, which acts as a bridge between the end of this trio and the beginning of next…

official description: GENETIC MORSELS introduces the new generation to our world, but their arrival brings with it the next step in human evolution. As the first world leader begins to unleash an army of super clones for his twisted plans, the young heroes must figure out how to stop him at all costs. Can they resist the enemy or will their own abilities prove too difficult to harness? PLANET ATE follows the corrupt trail left by a politician into buried secrets about the history of mankind. An organization called the A.T.E. will race against the clock to uncover the truth about visitors to our world. If they fail, an extraterrestrial threat will succeed, bringing with it mankind’s extinction.
DEVOURED UNIVERSE takes a crew of unlikely astronauts into deep space. As they follow a transmission from a nearby galaxy, they will discover that science fiction holds much fact. Their journey will send them to other worlds to seek out an element and alliances, in order to halt the eradication of reality itself. –

Available in print and digital at Lulu, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble sites.

Day 13 – Genetic Morsels

genetic morsels cover

Day 13 of #scrypthalloween looks at my novel GENETIC MORSELS. The cover art by @dpipito resembles a chalk board littered with scientific notes. This is a theme that will continue through the trilogy in different ways. The novel was originally going to be a wrap up of any loose ends I’d created in the previous books, but at this point there weren’t any, so I introduced a new main cast and added substance and a political theme…

official description: Twenty five years have passed since a war with artificial intelligence has forever changed the course of humanity. Belief in the first world leader has been gained by the majority, but there are a few who can see past the media bias. As President Jason Black’s scheme unravels, the next step in human evolution begins. A passing of the torch to a newer generation of unexpected heroes occurs as they mount a resistance into the political fray.  Led by Zoe Omandi the team is guided into dealing with not only their conflicting personalities, but also their extraordinary abilities. Real world physics makes this more than just a story of superheroes and villains. It is a story about survival and persistance. Can the heroes overcome the odds and unravel the truth before it is too late?

– available in print or digital at lulu.com and Amazon as well as part of the Beyond Human trilogy at Barnes and Noble.

Day 21 – Superior Inspiration

superInspiration for my novel GENETIC MORSELS and its spinoff EVOLVED MUTATIONS began before I could even hold a pen.  Since then it has grown to various different outlets.  Something about super human beings fascinates me.  In real life we’ve seen cases that have been unexplained.  Spontaneous human combustion, clairvoyants, feats of strength and survival that are above the norm.  The fact is that a great deal of the human brain is dormant.  We’ve yet to unlock the potential of utilizing the full capacity of our brains.

This is where my novel came in.  I wanted to present a story where the people in it had abilities in a real world setting and environment.  Imagine a generation of super powered people.  How did they get these abilities?  Is it the next step in evolution?  These are questions answered in the plot.

As I said my fascination began before I could hold a pen.  I grew up reading MARVEL and DC comics.  Unlike most comic book “fan boys” I typically don’t hate a movie or side with one company because I equally enjoy both.  I find the faults in these movies and tv shows, but the bottom line is MOST of them are very enjoyable to different degrees.

But Marvel, DC, and other comic book companies aside, there have been some other great movies that have a similar idea of putting the characters into a real world scenario.  Two of my favorites of these are UNBREAKABLE and CHRONICLE.

Unbreakable caught me off guard.  Back when M. Night Shyamalan was producing some really great content, he showed trailers for this film and they didn’t reveal a thing.  I had no idea what to expect going into this, and had no inclination that this was a “superhero” movie at all.  I knew nothing, and it turned out to be a really decent film.

I had a similar reaction with Chronicle.  I’d heard very little about it other than I needed to see it.  I knew this was a found footage superhero movie, and to me it was very refreshing (in ways different from Unbreakable and other movies).  If there is one superhero movie you should watch that is underrated, it’s this one.

When it came time to write GENETIC MORSELS, I had been swept up in endless hours of research.  As fascinating as superheroes are to me, my one problem is that comic books fail to recognize real world physics.  In my research I found the book THE PHYSICS OF SUPERHEROES by James Kakalios.  It is presented by a number of physicists who answer such questions as “How much food would the Flash need to consume in order to keep up his speed” and “How would Spiderman’s webs hold him to buildings without ripping chunks off or dislocating his arms?”  They use scientific fact and equations to show the answers.  I took much of this into account while creating some of my characters and the situations they’d be in.

While EVOLVED MUTATIONS seems a little bit more over the top than the novel it came from, it too uses real world common sense to keep everything as grounded as possible.  Prime example?  Bernie Johns.  He’s a character I created who has the ability to generate fire from his hands.  The problem is that his skin is not immune to fire.  He is a horribly scarred and misfigured man with a good heart and tragic story.  Daryl Dartmouth is another character who has super speed, but gravity and friction makes a speedster have difficulty in stopping.  In real life while moving at over a hundred miles an hour you’d have to slow down first to stop.  Comics don’t take that into account.  Someone moving at that speed could easily slam into a wall if they weren’t careful.

So what are some of your favorite super hero or villain stories?  What kind of freaks do you find intriguing?  If you’ve read Genetic Morsels, who is your favorite character?  Make sure to hashtag #scrypthalloween in your response and you may win a copy of one of my books. 🙂

Genetic Morsels trailer

GENETIC MORSELS takes my novels to a whole new level. The beginning of a new trilogy begins here. The trailer has arrived.

Interview about GENETIC MORSELS

“Genetic Morsels” interview with author Rick Pipito.  These are questions received by beta readers and others regarding the new novel and more.  Feel free to ask your own in the comments below.

Q: Tell us about GENETIC MORSELS and what inspired this novel.

Rick: An event has caused one generation of people to take the next step in human evolution.  While they struggle with their extraordinary abilities real world physics comes into play.  They must work together to bring down a corrupt politician who wants to exploit genetics in order to build a cabinet that will do anything he orders them to.  I grew up reading comic books, but to me there was always the realization that it was fake.  Certain things wouldn’t work in real life.  So I wanted to tell the story of would be superheroes and villains if they actually existed.

Q: Were there any difficulties in writing this book?

Rick: The research into physics was fun, but science didn’t cover it all.  In order for the characters to have some semblance of abilities I had to bend the laws of science a tiny bit while trying to keep with the realistic feel and the scifi element of it.  That and I’d written myself into a corner with something while setting up the next book.  I had to figure out a way to explain certain things while keeping with my own continuity and still going toward my ultimate goal.

Q: Is there a planned audiobook conversion?

Rick: Yes.  My conversion of FLESH AND LEFTOVERS into audio format has done well.  It took a long time to record that because of scheduling with voice actors.  Plus I feel that using one narrator will work from here on out.  I’m currently working on a solo audio conversion of BLOOD THE SECOND HELPING, and hope to knock out at least two of my books a year until I catch up.  So, we’re looking at GENETIC MORSELS being in audio form probably in 2017 sometime.  Hopefully sooner.

Q: What’s in the works now?

Rick: I’m researching and outlining for my next novel, PLANET ATE.  There’s also my second children’s book, A LITTLE BOY IN THE LAND OF SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS that I’m having illustrations done for.  I’ve got a dozen other writing projects that I’m always working on a little at a time.  I mean literally a dozen.  Lol.

Q: If you had to choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

Rick: I’d like to travel to any point and place in time and just observe.  I try to explain mysteries of human history in my writing because it fascinates me.  Whether it is the deepest parts of outer space or right here under our feet I just want to know what the history books got right and wrong.  I want to be able to see how things were and how they will be.  I don’t want to actually be in these places and times, but watch them however and whenever I want without interfering.

Q: Have you had any criticism of your works and how do you handle that?

Rick: I welcome criticism.  It helps me to learn and grow from my mistakes.  The biggest critique I’ve gotten is on FLESH AND LEFTOVERS.  While people love the story there are certain writing approaches that make it the weakest of my works.  It was my first book and will always hold a special place in my heart, but were I to write it now, I’d have taken different approaches.  I really have had overwhelming positive reviews on most of my books, so that keeps me going forward.  So far people are enjoying what I have done, and I hope to continue bringing good stuff to the table.  People who have read from the beginning have commented on how experience has shown me how to captivate an audience, and I cannot agree more.  I’m always willing to learn a little more to make it right.

Q: There’s an underlying political theme in GENETIC MORSELS.  Do politics today play a big role in your life?

Rick:  Yes to a certain extent.  I have strong core values and experience that influences the way I vote.  Unfortunately there haven’t been any good options recently, and I tend to vote for the lesser of two evils.  People refuse to budge from extreme beliefs on both sides, so we are stuck with issues that will never have an appeasing resolve.  I had to bring politics into it because it is the reality of our world today.  Media bias, public perception and corruption all play a part in the game that is played.

Q: Arguments often spur from political opinions.  Since your book on arguing is a few years old have you thought about doing an updated version, just to add a few things?

Rick: For the most part it is current, but there are some addendums I’d tack on to it.  My next version of it may just be the audiobook form when I do that.  It would be more like a version 2.0.

Q: GENETIC MORSELS introduces a mostly new cast of characters.  Do you miss utilizing the already established ones?

Rick: Absolutely.  If these were real life situations people would die, become injured, grow old, etc.  There’s only so much they can experience and make it feel realistic.  I feel as though a lot of the characters are people I know because I’ve “worked” with them for so long.  I’ll admit that I shed tears when I kill a character off, but it has to be done at times.  As much as I miss some of the old ones, I now have a new cast of protagonists to focus on for a story or two.  That is very exciting to me.

Q: It seems your writing has come a long way since the beginning.  This being your 15th publication, where do you see yourself in another 5 years?

Rick: Writing full time for a living.  It has to be that way.  I can’t keep up with the voices in my head giving me ideas.  The only path that makes sense is to assist my wife’s culinary work (Homemade Delish), and do what I love to do (which other than being a dad to my two awesome kids is writing).

Q: You often find a way to foreshadow future books in each release.  Other than the evident topic of PLANET ATE, is there anything you can say about other teasers to come?

Rick: hmmm.  Okay. Let’s just say some things have not been forgotten.  Something or someone from the past will resurface in some form.  I won’t say more than that.  Just stay tuned.

Q: sCrypt Comics is now sCrypt Publishing.  Why the change?

Rick: I still plan on doing comic spinoffs.  The stories are already written for the next three.  They are however very time consuming.  I can cover more ground working on my own things than to also be directing a group of artists to get it right.  sCrypt Comics isn’t gone, it’s just incorporated into a larger picture.  I’m now doing audio books, novels, children’s books, and editing.  I also have plans to expand that into helping other independent authors along the way.  It just was time to state what is already happening by making the name change.  The ideas that my brother and I have for it are really exciting.

Q: Speaking of Dan (Pipito), tell us about the artwork he did for this cover.

Rick: Dan has been working in trilogy themes to coincide with each cover.  The first two trilogies had their own set approaches to the type of cover art we saw.  With this trilogy he felt that since science played such a huge part in it, that a classroom chalkboard would be a different type of touch.  I won’t say what his plans are for the next two novel covers, but they will compliment this one really well.

Q: Where can someone get a copy of your books?

Rick: All of my novels are available in paperback at www.lulu.com.  They are also available for the Kindle at www.amazon.com. My comics are at www.indypress.com and the audio book and future ones I release are available at www.audible.com and itunes.

Day 11: New Species in GENETIC MORSELS

Although the book is not yet available (it is scheduled to be released in early 2015), GENETIC MORSELS is already gaining popularity.  So what’s the deal with this next novel?

Imagine if the evolutionary process took a sudden leap forward today.  Suddenly people developed abilities of the like that you’d only see in comic books.  The difference is that comic books aren’t real.  When physics of the real world applies, these “powers” can become deadly to not only the user but those around them.

It is a tale of tragedy and struggle to find one’s self.  It is a tale of corrupt government and the few who can stand against it.  It is a tale of what it means to be a family.  Obviously there isn’t much that can be discussed at this point, other than the rights that currently exist.  This stand alone book brings back familiar characters from my previous entries, but in their latter years.  Zoe Omandi, the African girl who was possessed by an angel at the age of eleven, is now an adult in her thirties.  Cain Lightcap, the son of Gordon and Moira, has a rare blood type that puzzles even modern biologists.  Jason Black is now President of the World.  Richard Biggs has dropped his codename “Hawk” and his seat in the senate to reform his former black ops team.  And those are just the tip of the iceberg.

The new characters coming in will cover all sorts of ground and be introduced to an eventual trilogy that will have them facing off against even greater threats than what the “homo-evolutis” will bring.
My question to you is this… If you had the choice to pick one super powered ability.  What would it be and why?
