Cape May, New Jersey is one of my favorite places to escape to for writing and inspiration. I’ve been wrapped up with a few books in process, but needed a little escape, and this weekend was perfect. Instead of staying at our normal place, my wife Roberta was invited to review the Congress Hall hotel. (Check out http://www.homemadedelish.com for her review).

The history in that place alone is amazing, but the town has so much more going on than just that one land mark. The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (www.capemaymac.org) has a wide array of tours and events available all year round.

We’ve previously done the horse and buggy tour, but decided to go for something a little more in my realm of writing. I originally intended to do the ghost trolley tour, but Susan Krysiak (director of media relations) suggested I check out the Cape Mayhem Trolley Tour.

This goes beyond just telling about the many haunted tales of the town, but delves into the history of some bizarre rituals and practices that people did during the Victorian Era.

I don’t want to spoil much about the ride itself on the history end, because it is something you need to see for yourself. What I can say is that even if you aren’t a history buff or fan of the weird and spooky, this is a very relaxing and fun half hour ride.

One place I will mention that was the highlight of the tour was the story about the Emlen Physick Estate. I’d always seen the house but didn’t know how intriguing its history was. My next trip to town will definitely include a tour of the estate, which is also run by the same knowledgeable people as the trolley tours.

If you’ve ever been on one of these tours, then please comment below and share your experiences. If you haven’t then make sure to visit http://www.capemaymac.org to see what you’re missing. Feel free to contact their media relations at 609-224-6036 or skrysiak@capemaymac.org #capemaymac

Think, Sip, Write: Ep 21 – Ghosts and Hauntings

Roberta joins me once again as we discuss what inspired me to write my award winning novel SOULS 4 SUPPER, and its spinoff short story GHOSTLY HAUNTINGS. We talk ghosts, haunted places, and some spooky things.

What kind of creepy stories do you have? Share in the comments below.

Day 12 – Haunted Inspiration

gbusI could just put a whole bunch of other scary stories in here, but the ghost stories that stuck with me the most over the years were those from the Ghostbusters franchise.  In my novel SOULS 4 SUPPER, and its spinoff GHOSTLY HAUNTINGS, the first names of some of the characters pay tribute to the actors and cast of the original films.

The first ghost movie I ever watched was the original Ghostbusters.  I was instantly a fan.  The follow up, Ghostbusters 2, may not get the credit it deserves but it is still a great movie in my opinion.  Again, I was a kid, so when The Real Ghostbusters cartoon came out I was all for it.  I’m pretty sure I caught every episode and even liked the less detailed animation that followed (The Extreme Ghostbusters).

My hopes for a third feature film in the franchise died out, but then we got Ghostbusters the Video Game.  This brought together the original writers and actors in a storyline that basically was the third movie.

Now before you get all bent out of shape about me not including the new Ghostbusters movie in there, I’ll explain.  First off, I haven’t seen it yet.  I know.  I know.  I plan on it, but am not a fan of remakes that disregard the originals.  In my opinion the new one should have been a loose sequel.  It would have made more sense and made fans happy.  I will see it eventually though.

The other reason for not including it is because I’m talking about the inspiration I had with ghosts.  There are countless movies I’ve seen that freaked me out and they all made their mark, but they were all a one and done watch.  I can still watch GB over and over again and not get sick of it.  I wrote Souls and Ghostly before the new movie came out, so it can’t count as inspiration.

Regardless, if you like a good spooky book, check mine out.  Souls got me a place in the top 25 and 100 lists of authors, and I even freaked myself out at times writing it.  What are your favorite ghost stories?  Make sure to use the hashtag #scrypthalloween if you post, and you’ll have a chance to win one of my books!

Day 10 – Souls 4 Supper

cover art for "Souls 4 Supper"SOULS 4 SUPPER was the novel that broke some major ground for me.  It gained me a place in the top 100 and top 25 author lists, and continues to soar.

When the search for Pandora’s Box takes a team of military and civilian specialists into the heart of Atlantis, they are not prepared for what they find.  Can they locate the artifact before the lost souls and spirits of the dead haunt the living forever?

SOULS 4 SUPPER is available in print at lulu.com and in digital at Amazon.
