Review: Deadpool 2
The Merc With A Mouth is back, but did the sequel keep up with expectations? The answer could go either way. If you have knowledge of the other comic book movies out there, or are just a comic fan, then yes yes yes… this was as good if not better than the first. For those who might not be up to speed on all the spandex wearing superhero films, some of the jokes may go over your head… but it would still be a fun and enjoyable movie to see.
There are a few spoilers I’ll mention, so if you just want the rating, then scroll down to the bottom, otherwise… be warned.
Loaded with shocking moments, and cameos by actors and other comic book characters, Deadpool 2 literally had me laughing so hard I was in tears. This time though, it isn’t just Wade Wilson who is the highlight of the film. Cable, Domino, and Colossus equally dominate with their own unique personalities. This works well with Deadpool, and I especially can’t wait for this to come out for home release.
I know a lot of people complained about Juggernaut’s CGI effects, but I barely noticed because I was thrilled to see him portrayed properly, and it’s still way better than some of the other CG I’ve seen in recent films. I do have one complaint however, and this is the common themed problem throughout all of the X-Men films. The continuity.
When does this take place and in which time line? For example… Deadpool’s music box in the beginning directly references the Logan movie. Is this just him breaking the 4th wall (which was done expertly a dozen times or so)? The answer is no… it’s not after Logan, but before. How do I know? Because all of the X-Men are still alive, and it’s very evident that they are. Then we just assume that it is running along side a modern day theme, but then again, the X-Men aren’t portrayed by their older actors, but by the younger ones. hmmm. Oh, and then the time travel thing during the credits adds to the confusion because in the current timeline X-Men origins Wolverine never happens. So, that being the case, does time travel let them go to different pasts?
The continuity thing can be forgiven and overlooked. It doesn’t bother me that much because of Wade and his 4th wall breaching. It sort of makes things better in some ways. The other issue is that they killed of Black Tom Cassidy before he even got to be a threat. That was a huge disappointment for me. Other than that I’ve no complaints.
From here I guess they’d do an X-Force movie over a Deadpool 3 because it would just make more sense. The name “Essex” has been in 3 movies so far, so having the X-Force up against a villain like Mister Sinister would probably end up being the best film in this universe yet.
Deadpool 2 gets 4 out of 5 sCrypt ratings from me. I loved it and will definitely own it at some point. What were your thoughts? Comment below and let’s discuss.
Update!! SDCC 2012: Marvel News
I won’t be able to cover ALL of Marvel’s announcements for this year’s San Diego Comic Con, but I will include the key points of interest in my book.
First off, A deadpool video game has been announced. From the looks of the trailer, I’m betting it is going to be something that makes every Deadpool fan happy. The official website is here: http://deadpoolgame.com/
Next we go to the Disney/Marvel merger. Anyone remember a few years back, when rumor was that there would be a crossover between companies that was bound to happen at some point? Well, the moment has arrived. “Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel” has been announced. In it, Ironman, Hulk, Thor and Spiderman lose their powers and must enlist the help of Disney’s Phineas and Ferb. Also guest starring are Venom, Redskull, and Whiplash as confirmed villains. The coverage of this can be found at www.disneyabcvideo.com
And what about Marvel on TV? Well, “Avengers: Earth’s mightiest Heroes” was said to have been cancelled, but the new series “Avengers Assemble” is being seen as a continuation of that series.
Footage was shown from the new animated series coming soon “Hulk and the Agents of SMASH.” It included Red Hulk, She Hulk, Skaar, A Bomb, and of course the title character.
There are a series of Marvel Knights motion comics coming. These include: Inhumans, Eternals, Wolvering: Origins, Wolverine: Weapon X, and Ultimate Wolvering vs Hulk.
Ultimate Spiderman has been considered the #1 animated series on Disney XD. Therefore, it has been renewed for a second season and will include Rhino, Beetle, Lizard, and Electro.
According to www.comicbookmovie.com, Thomas Jane has made a return appearance as the Punisher in a short movie called “My Movie”. Here is their description. — The film, entitled “My Movie”, starred Thomas Jane and his good buddy Ron Perlman who was also in attendance.
The film begins with Thomas Jane trying to do his laundry at the local laundry mat, while a group of thugs begin making trouble. Once he’s had enough, he picks up a bottle of Jack Daniels from Ron Perlman’s liquor store and proceeds to deal out his brand of “justice” with said Jack Daniels. Yes, he uses the bottle to take out the entire group of thugs, except for their leader, who gets “punished”. VERY violent, VERY bloody, and VERY well received by those in attendance. When the young boy Thomas Jane rescues tries to return a shirt that fell out of his laundry basket, Thomas Jane says “Keep it. It’s got a hole in it.” and throws the shirt back to the boy, revealing a black shirt with the new Punisher skull on it, which was designed by Tim Bradstreet. — I wished I would have gotten to see this as I love his incarnation of the Punisher. He of course was asked about possibly reprising the role now that Marvel owns the rights to the character once again. He was enthusiastic with interest.
In the world of the Avengers Alliance game on facebook, it has been announced that the Avengers vs X-men storyline currently in the comics, will be coming as an expansion to the turn based game.
Now let’s take a look (I’ve included the official title cards) of the Marvel Phase 2 movie slate. Antman footage was shown. It is unclear as to who is playing the part, but from reactions on Superherohype.com, and other comic book movie websites, the reaction was exciting. No release date has been given, but Edgar Wright begins filming this next year.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be released on 4/4/14. I guess that gives us an idea that Bucky did indeed survive, and he will become the Winter Soldier. Rumors are still flying about Falcon being a part of this movie as well.
Ironman 3 footage was debuted, and people are claiming it is HOT HOT HOT. There are a few bits of coverage of Q and A panels, and a LOT was talked about. Even the possibility of Pepper Potts becoming Rescue. Ben Kingsley is definitely the Mandarin complete with robe and rings, and a surprise appearace by RDJ rounded out the event.
Guardians of the Galaxy will come out on 8/1/14. Drax, Groot, Rocket Raccon and Nova are all confirmed as part of the movie, and it is speculated that Thanos will indeed be the villain after his introduction in the Avengers. There is concept art of the characters available online as well.
Finally, Thor: The Dark World has an official release date of 11/8/13. The Dark Elves will be playing a role in this movie, but it is unknown to what extent.
I’m going to add a few more bits of coverage, including a DC coverage, and other categories.
You don’t need Superbowl Commercials if you have Deadpool!
Issue: Cable and Deadpool Volume 1-36
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Year: 2007 Page Count: 22
Reviewed by Rick Pipito for storyline and plot progression. (be warned, there are spoilers below)
Since I found the Superbowl commercials this past Sunday to be lacking in the humor department, with a few exceptions, I decided to do a special review. The character of Deadpool has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. He is certifiably insane, but badass at the same time. The “Merc with the Mouth” has a unique and amusing ability as well. Aside from his normal arsenal and abilities, he is the only character that can break the fourth wall. This means that he knows he is a comic book character and that we are reading him in the pages.
This issue begins with Deadpool (Wade Wilson) in the offices of Marvel Comics. He is demanding to see the man in charge. Why, you ask? Wade believes that the Marvel writers have given him the shaft as well as many secondary characters after the events of the “Civil War” storyline. To prove himself the best that there is, he wants a one on one fight with Taskmaster. His choice opponent has a great ability as well. Taskmaster can copy the combat skills of any opponent putting them basically on even fighting ground; Only after he copies their ability, he retains it in his memory. The Marvel executives are the only ones who know where this other master mercenary can be located.
I think this was a great intro. It showed how Wade is just in his own world mentally. As one of Marvel’s employees talks to him, he is ranting about pictures on the wall. Definitely a laugh. Now here is the downside for me. I grew up knowing Deadpool as a merc with no problem killing. Apparently Cable had come in at one point and implanted a microchip inside Wilson to give him a conscience when it came to killing.
When he finally finds and frees Taskmaster from his prison, a battle ensues. The good news is that Deadpool is so insane, that he doesn’t even care if he is still capable of killing or not. Taskmaster cuts him open, but with Wilson’s healing ability, he just keeps going and mocking his enemy. Oh, and did I mention that Wade is handcuffed through the entire battle?
I don’t want to spoil how he does it, but Deadpool actually takes down Taskmaster fairly easy in the end. The whole fight was fantastic. It really showcased Wilson for how nuts he truly is. Here is the even more amusing part. Wilson has had a few world leaders kidnapped and forced to watch the mercenary duel. He has shown his skill in winning, but the whole charade only angers the leaders. While Deadpool speaks, he basically sets himself up for mockery; though a few are still impressed.
Score one for Deadpool. His goal was semi accomplished as he feels he has proven his worth. The issue goes out with a bang just as it began with some more humorous dialogue between Wade, Taskmaster, and a helper of Wade’s.
On a scale of one to ten I give this issue a nine for its humor and action.
