Fun facts

Day 15: FLESH AND LEFTOVERS

IMG_2600[1]IMG_E2602[1]Day 15 of #scrypthalloween goes way back to my first #novel FLESH AND LEFTOVERS. Here are some facts: 1) it became published on August 9, 2010. 2) I initially started it as a response to conversations I had with others about what we’d do in a #zombie outbreak. I had no idea it would spawn a #writing career out of it. 3) I unfortunately did not have an editor for it, so there were a few mistakes during the print, but it was all part of the learning experience. 4) halfway through the #book I realized I was having a lot of fun and decided I wanted it to begin a series with each entry focusing on a different threat. It soon went from zombies to everything else. 5) I had a few emails from readers who claimed I’d given them nightmares and in one instance threw up from a graphic scene. 6) @dpipito created the cover art with teeth tearing into raw meat. It was a subtle way to portray the topic and remains a favorite to this day. What are your favorite zombie stories? #authorsofinstagram #horror

Day 14: THE LOST YEAR

Lost YearIMG_E2597[1]Day 14 of #scrypthalloween shows a preview of my upcoming spinoff THE LOST YEAR. Some facts: 1) it will be published on November 5, 2019. 2) this will be the final entry in the Eternal Hunger Saga. It follows the events of CONSUMED BY WAR but stands on its own. 3) the plot involves a deadly virus and search for a cure. This was originally a concept I had for an earlier book that was shelved until reworked. 4) I wanted to bring some closure to Mayan civilization so tying that into the story was tricky at first. I spent so many hours rewriting and replanting the approach that I could have written half of a full length novel with better planning. 5) the story lead is a strong female character inspired by the amazing women in my immediate and extended family. She’s not perfect but dedicates herself to getting the job done. #book #shortstory #spinoff #virus #mayan #ruins #mayanruins #authorsofinstagram

Day 13: ALIEN ENCOUNTERS

img_25941.pngimg_e25961.jpgDay 13 of #scrypthalloween delves into my short story spinoff ALIEN ENCOUNTERS. Some facts: 1) it was published on sept 15, 2016. 2) the cover is a negative of a photo that conspiracy theorists believe is a leaked alien picture from the FBI’s files. 3) though the novel it’s based off of PLANET ATE focuses more on the conspiracy of extra terrestrials living among us, Encounters takes a more outlandish approach. I wanted it to be less grounded to appease to a different audience. 4) beneath the font on the cover as well as hidden in the book are the all seeing eye and a pyramid. 5) people talk about #area51 but the truth may lie at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, so including it seemed just as important as Groom Lake.

Day 12: DEVOURED UNIVERSE

IMG_2591[1]IMG_E2593[1]Day 12 #scrypthalloween takes a look at an excerpt and some facts from my novel DEVOURED UNIVERSE. 1) it was published on August 28, 2016. 2) the quotes that precede each chapter were chosen to directly relate to different discoveries by scientists about the universe. 3) my goal behind the book was to delve into the unknown in a way that didn’t repeat what has been done in Star Trek or other space stories. It is all based on what we know as well as theories substantiated by various studies. 4) originally this was planned as part 2 to PLANET ATE, but as I wrote Planet I realized I could expand on both creating a great follow up and still maintaining that they are separate entities in the saga. 5) @dpipito did the cover design to fit the theme of the previous two novels in the trilogy. This time it’s a digital layout. One day we’d like to rerelease with an actual holographic cover. #space #exploration #universe What are your favorite space stories?

Day 11: THE LOST HOUR

img_25861.pngIMG_E2585[1]Day 11 of #scrypthalloween takes a look at my short story THE LOST HOUR. Some facts: 1) It was published in print and digital at lulu and amazon on 9/26/2017. 2) The book takes place near the Bryn Athyn Cathedral in Pennsylvania. It is where I wrote the entire scene while enjoying the spectacular view of the gothic structures. 3) The book was written when I realized I’d had a loophole in one of my books. In one novel I’d mentioned that Samantha Clayton had a son, and in the next novel she mentions nothing about him as if he never existed. Since I was writing about time travel I used that as a starting point to explain the discrepancy. 4) Many years take place between #novels 9 and 10, so I place this in that time period to be a bridge of sorts between the two. 5) there are rules and guidelines to time travel in the universe I’ve created so this takes an in depth look at the trial and error of why those laws are in place. What is your favorite #timetravel story? #book #shortstory #authorsofinstagram

Day 10 LEGENDS OF VAMPIRE

IMG_E2583[1]Day 10 of #scrypthalloween goes way back to my spinoff book LEGENDS OF VAMPIRE. Some facts: 1) It was originally published as a graphic novel on February 2, 2012 and later in 2016 converted to text. 2) a day before our final submission was due one of the artists backed out with no warning. We were left scrambling because those pages were an important element. So we ended up using storyboards in the missing pages stead. 3) the story of Sampson and Delilah as well as the reason and how the Great Sphinx of Giza was built get a vampiric twist in the story. 4) for the cover @dpipito took a photo of a friend of ours as if she’s been bitten while sipping wine. Then we passed it through an oil canvas filter to give it a rustic feel. 5) the character of Cory Wright is the only character I’ve created to date where his fate is left unaddressed. I left it up to the reader to ponder and discuss. #book #shortstory #vampire #vampires #wine #dracula #authorsofinstagram #graphicnovel

Day 9: VIRAL UPGRADES

IMG_2580[1]IMG_E2579[1]Day 9 of #scrypthalloween looks at my short story spinoff VIRAL UPGRADES. Some facts: 1) It was originally published on September 14, 2016. 2) Out of all the covers for my books this one took the least amount of thought. It was pretty self explanatory from the start and perfectly fitting. 3) this is another deleted scenes book where the events within coincide with the plot of TECHNO FEAST and add expand upon that novel. 4) the description of what the virtual cyber world looked like from a computer’s perspective came to me during a baseball game when I was struck in the head with a ball when I was passing by. The lights and vision that I had for a few minutes were a perfect visual for the world I was trying to create. 5) surprisingly there was a lot of research involved in this and the novel it spun from. I had to look into not only what would happen but how the world would react to certain computer and technological glitches. There were so many conflicting thoughts on it that narrowing down what was most likely was a tedious task, but very informative. #book #shortstory #technology

Day 8: EVOLVED MUTATIONS

img_25741.pngimg_e25761.jpgDay 8 of #scrypthalloween looks at my short spinoff #book EVOLVED MUTATIONS. Some facts: 1) It was published on September 15th 2016. 2) the entire contents of the book are deleted scenes from my novel GENETIC MORSELS. I felt they worked better on their own. 3) one of the scenes came to me when I was standing overlooking #Philadelphia from the top of the Comcast building. I thought how horrible it would be if someone jumped, and it instantly became part of the story. 4) because this was based on people with extraordinary abilities I almost brought artists in to do another graphic novel, but decided it would have not made the due date.Instead I wrote it in a way where it could be converted into a comic version at some point if I desire down the line. 5) the cover is comprised of close up photos of my family’s eyes and altered to represent different super abilities. The top left is my son, then clockwise it’s me, my daughter, and my wife @homemadedelish .

Day 7: THE THIRST OF CAIN

IMG_2571IMG_E2573

Day 7 of #scrypthalloween focuses on my #novel THE THIRST OF CAIN. Some facts: 1) it was published on May 15, 2018. 2) I was awarded the “Best opening lines of a novel” for it. 3) after a lot of feedback and reader love for the characters of Cain and Lilith I decided to delve back into their history for one final outing in this book. 4) the plot originally didn’t revolve around time travel, but was going to feature finding out that the Garden of Eden was actually another planet. 5) @dpipito @pintsizedpages did the art for the cover and it was decided to use Stonehenge as the backdrop since it is integral to the plot.

Day 6: A COURSE FOR HUMANITY

IMG_2565[1]img_e25671.jpgDay 6 of #scrypthalloween takes a peek at my novel A COURSE FOR HUMANITY. Some facts: 1) It was written in the year 2000 but I shelved the idea for years to get it just right. 2) March 8, 2017 was the publication date with some tweaks to the story and tying it in to my main series of #books, 3) The cover is a photograph of plains with the green energy as an interpretation of time ripples featured in the plot. 4) the recurring theme of “The truth was lost” was a dig at how divided we’ve come because of social media and a lack of fact finding, 5) the book was my response for the population of the world to open up their eyes, accept and understand differences, and move forward for the betterment of all.

Day 5: A LITTLE GIRL IN THE LAND OF THE HICCUPS

IMG_2559[1]IMG_E2562[1]Day 5 of #scrypthalloween looks at my first children’s book A LITTLE GIRL IN THE LAND OF THE HICCUPS. Some facts: 1) It was published on Aug 29, 2016. 2) the watercolor art throughout the book is done by @dpipito @pintsizedpages 3) I wrote the book for my daughter when she was hiccuping often in the womb. 4) My desire was to create a world like the L Frank Baum’s Oz or Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland 5) The Hiccup creatures were designed by Dan based on what I needed, so the description of them wasn’t written until after the final art submission. #childrensbooks #illustration #authorsofinstagram #oz #wonderland #hiccups #girlpower

Day 4: IN CASE OF WEREWOLF

IMG_2556[1]IMG_E2558[1]Day 4 of #scrypthalloween is all about IN CASE OF WEREWOLF. Here are some facts about my short story spinoff: 1) it was originally published as a graphic novel featuring artists from all over the United States, 2) October 29, 2012 was its debut in print, 3) the cover was done as a photo using various filters as well as medical model bones, hair and black coffee by @dpipito . 4) Norse mythology, The Moonlight Battle of 1780, Jack the Ripper, Beauty and the Beast, and Dr Jekyll and Mister Hyde are the historical and fictitious elements paid tribute to within the pages. 5) I wrote one of the chapters while observing a full moon outdoors in the frigid cold of early January to properly capture a scene I was describing. #book #spinoff #werewolf #authorsofinstagram It’s available in print and digital forms at lulu.com and Amazon as well as part of the Eden’s order trilogy at Barnes and Noble.

Day 3: BEYOND HUMAN

IMG_2555[1]Day 3 of #scrypthalloween is all about my BEYOND HUMAN TRILOGY. Some facts: 1) even though it’s a trilogy it contains six books. A trio of novels and their spinoff shorts (GENETIC MORSELS, PLANET ATE, DEVOURED UNIVERSE, EVOLVED MUTATIONS, ALIEN ENCOUNTERS, and COSMIC ORBITS). 2) the collection was published originally on February 7, 2017. 3) The cover art by @pintsizedpages @dpipito is inspired by #leonardodavinci ‘s Vetruvian Man. On it you can see an amalgamation of the topics from the books (evolution, aliens, and conspiracies). 4) there is bonus content in the print version of the trilogy including an insignia and hint at what is to follow. 5) it’s available in print at Barnes and Noble and lulu websites as well as on Amazon. #book #trilogy #novel #alien #halloween #conspiracy #evolution #geneticengineering

Day 2: SOULS 4 SUPPER

IMG_2552[1]IMG_E2553[1]Day 2 of #scrypthalloween outs the spotlight on my novel SOULS 4 SUPPER. Here’s an excerpt and some facts: 1) this book placed me on the top 100 author list, 2) it was published on 10/26/12 and is available in print and digital at lulu and amazon, 3) most of this #novel was inspired by experiences I have had at some point in life, 4) I wrote a scene so terrifying that I actually freaked myself out while #writing it. 5) Atlantis, Joan of Arc, Aladdin’s Lamp, Pandora’s Box, JFK, the Tower of Babel, and Veronica Berenice Allred’s all of the historical or mythological elements that play a role in the plot. #authorsofinstagram #book #bestseller #ghosts #haunted #halloween.

Day 1: Cosmic Orbits

IMG_2547[1]img_e25491.jpg#scrypthalloween is back, so each day I’ll be focusing on one of my books with some fun facts, a teaser page and highlights.

Day 1 features my short story COSMIC ORBITS. Some facts: 1) the cover uses a public domain image taken by the Hubble telescope and thrown through a filter, 2) the book was released on September 16, 2016 on lulu.com and Amazon, 3) it is a spinoff from DEVOURED UNIVERSE and direct follow-up to TECHNO FEAST, 4) the story is the first I’ve done based on reader requests to explain what happened to a certain “character”, 5) the book has a cosmic god-like being called “Unity” which was my response to what the world needs today. Stay tuned for more fun facts and feel free to grab yourself a copy in print and digital just in time for #Halloween #book #shortstory

Animals of Wonderland: #2 The Caterpillar

My daughter painted another in her Animals of Wonderland series.  The Caterpillar was her focus this time, and she included her initials “LRP” in the hookah smoke.  A quote by Lewis Carroll is on the back of the painting that says, “One of the hardest things in the world is to convey a meaning accurately from one mind to another.”

A new short story

My next novella is now in the works.  THE LOST YEAR will be available this Fall and will be quite a thrilling ride.  Doctor Erin Vaughn will be racing to find a cure to a virus that makes Ebola look like the flu.  She will be put in direct conflict with the U.S. Government and if that’s not enough, her only hope may be in solving an ancient riddle within the Mayan Calendar.

That’s all I’m saying for now.  And for those who’ve written me and asked “Whatever happened to Donald Christopher Blake?” you’ll have those answers.

Here’s a mockup I have of the cover art.  Let me know what you think.  It’s not the final piece, but you get the idea.  I’m still working on font.Lost Year

Transformers fan film: From Spark To Ash

I thought I’d share this here, being as I’ve been lacking in the Think, Sip, Write posts as of late.  Lots going on.  My son has become a huge Transformers fan and was trying to take video to make a movie of a story he created among his toys.  I offered to help and show him how to do stop motion animation.

It’s very amateur as we’d done it fairly hastily, but it’s a fun little film and has garnered enough attention that we will soon be working on a sequel.

Spark to Ash is just a battle between Autobots and Decepticons, but there’s also that cliffhanger of a post credit scene.  Let us know what you think.

Animals of Wonderland #1: Cheshire Cat & Breadandbutterfly

IMG_E1712[1]

My daughter, Lana, returns with her latest painting.  This is part 1 of her “Animals of Wonderland” series.  Here’s her version of the Cheshire Cat and Breadandbutterfly.

Not bad for a ten year old.

2019 Best First Lines

IMG_1081I spent the weekend overwhelmed with gratitude.  My novel THE THIRST OF CAIN has been chosen as the gold medal winner for the 2019 Best first lines of a novel by Authorsdb.  The criteria includes: Best overall rating, lines that pull the reader into the story, and making the reader feel involved in the story.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the support of readers and authorsdb for giving me this award.  You can grab a copy of the novel as well as order my new one CONSUMED BY WAR at lulu.com in print and on Amazon in digital format.

Be sure to head on over to http://www.authorsdb.com to check out some other selections for great reads as well.

Final edits for CONSUMED BY WAR

I finished the first round of edits and have half of what I’ve done back from the editor for round 2 of polishing it up.  Amidst all of this I found that I wanted to leave something more for the reader, so I added a little surprise stinger at the end that will enable a plot point for a future book or short story.  It’s nothing big, but enough that I can go back to it soon and write more.

No matter what I do to wrap up this saga I just can’t help adding a little more for anyone who has followed the series or individual entries.  Perhaps all my future books will take place in the same reality as the current series, but on its own accord.  I love planting seeds like these, but what do you feel as a reader?  Do you like to have something to look forward to if the story is closed out?  Or would you rather there be no open ends?

Artwork for the new novel

While CONSUMED BY WAR is being wrapped up, and after the teaser last month for the cover (done by Dan Pipito) of the new novel, comes some amazing sketches for the interior.  Here’s a quick teaser with more to come, but in the meantime head on over to @vaughn_casons_creations on Instagram to see some of her amazing work and more images from what she’s working on for the book.  Stay tuned for pre-order info and release date in July.
